WINS/DHCP on same server

By Japes ·
Just a quickie.

We have a mainly NT based network with 7 servers (all NT4.0 sp6)

One of our BDCs is currently operating as our DHCP server. It's quite a pokey machine (dual processor, oodles of ram), and I was wondering whether there are any implications involved with making this machine a WINS server also.

Any comments would be helpful

WINS/DHCP on same server

How many users are you processing daily? Is it just performing DHCP and BDC functions? If so, then there won't be much to worry about.

If you are processing lots of logins and are serving print jobs, DNS, etc - you may want to consider moving WINS to a different server (don't put all your eggs in one basket, or so to speak, right?)

You may want to consider looking at some performance statistics with perfmon just to see what your average processor/memory usage is during the day, that wayyou can have a true idea of how much load your server is bearing.

Good luck!

Thanks for your thoughts. It is a really lazy server, apart from its BDC role, its' main function is a library server, so it really doesn't do much at all. We only have a small network so I don't think the load will be too great, but that's a goodpoint about eggs and baskets.
