Wins issue

By musebasa ·
I have been trying to stop wins because the server it was replicating to was removed from the network and the wins is taking 90% of the CPU. when I try to stop it from the service it keeps giving me error. When i see it from windows diagnostic it says stop pending but it still takes all the CPU. Is there anyway to stop it so that it?The system is NT 4.0.

thanks.

What error are you getting?

If you have the ability to restart the server, the surefire way to stop the WINS service is to set its startup configuration in Services to disabled, and then reboot. The shutdown sequence will stop WINS, and then it will not restart.

When you look at hte WinsManager are there any servers still listed? If so delete them and then stop the service. As stated before, your reboot (if possible) is the easiest solution.
