Winword.exe Dr Watson error

By danny.cintron ·
Hi,
I have a machine running NT4.0, SP6a with Office 97. When the user brings up the Office Assistant and does a search, intermittantly they receive a Dr Watson error, exception access violation error in Winword.exe. We have tried un/reinstallingWord 97, Office 97 and reapplying SR1 and 2 but the same occurs. We next tried redoing the user's nt profile but same results. Any ideas?

Winword.exe Dr Watson error

This is more of a guess than an answer. I had a problem like this with Outlook, and reinstalling didn't help. But the error was always with the specific program and the Windows kernel. I had to replace the kernel32.exe with the extract command. If your error always causes an invalid page fault with your kernel, this may work for you. Extract the kernel from the Windows CD. I hope this helps. I did this like four years ago with Windows 98.

The end result of this call was that the user ended up just not using the help function. I wouldn't take a chance reinstalling kernel32.exe since this is an NT machine and it uses a different type of file ntoskrnl.exe to be exact. If I replace that file I could be risking the machine not being able to boot up. Thanks for the help guys!
