Sorry, Microsoft has an article concerning this problem. You can use the following address to read it:

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q252/9/68.asp

(there are no spaces in this address)

or you can open Internet Explorer and type in the "Address box" directly below the toolbar:

MSKB Q252968

and hit the enter key. It would be a good idea to print out the article to read it and work on your machine.
Good luck

I did try all the instructions in the article but it made no change. I know that you had the correct idea based on the article. I also have run the Office Correction and reintall but no change either. Any other ideas?

Your task list shows Windword is running. Have you installed Service Release 2? Have you tried - detect and repair. If not, go to add/install. Click on Office 2000 disk 1 and select Detect and repair. Reboot.
(Make sure WORD is not running.) In fact I suggest you do it with as clean a boot as you can, IE load ONLY what is necessary. If in start-up Fast find is running. Kill it. You don't need it. You don't need Office Menu Either. It is a resource HOG. BTW check your resources, are theybeloe 30%? May contribute. Start WORD holding SHIFT KEY DOWN (BTW this works with all MSOFT PRIDS). No WORD start up files will run. If you get it up, check Normal dot and see if any weird Macros are there? Also - How many tool bars are you using? The fewer the better. Hope I didn't confuse you.
1. Check what is loading in Windows - clean up. ( You can also check by running MDAC)
2. Clean up
3. Detect and repair. (make sure not running in BK
4. Start Word hold Shift key.
5. Check Normal dot and tool bars.
6. Worst case, find normal dot. Rename normal.bak and then open WORD. Word will create new dot. Then use Organizer and copy only those MACROS you really need.
Hope that helps.

4. Start Word
Also a Word MACRO may be running in BK on Start up. When starting WORD,
