WinXP Issues

By DavidCBolton ·
Hi...and thanks in advance for any assistance which may be obtained here...

I have two questions for issues that have just started occuring. I will state that I run Ad-Aware, Spybot Search and Destroy, and my anti-virus at least once a week, so I don't think these are caused by a virus or anything along those lines.

1. When I try to install a program from the CD-ROM drive, I get a dialog box that is referring to "downloading" files and the safety issues of such. The only option I am given is Open, Save or Cancel. If I hit Open the install terminates.

2. When I try to click on a link in an email, through Outlook Express 6, it won't open the page in my browser (Mozilla).

Again...both of these issues have just begun happening in the last couple of days...

Any thoughts, hints, clues or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Go into Control Panel - User Accounts. See if your rights to make system changes have been altered.

If nothing appears altered and you have a recent restore point, you might try restoring to a date before the problem began occuring. To find out how to use system restore, go into control panel and hit F2 or click on Help. Do a search on system restore and follow the instructions.

If you don't have a recent restore point, XP claims to have a method of reinstalling without erasing your hard drive [unless you have a manufacturer's restore disk that automatically reformats the drive]. I haven't done this myself, but I have heard that it is risky [data loss] and time consuming.
