WinXP: "My Docs" on Drive D for all users? HOW?

By mmsquinn ·
My new computer has two hard drives. I want all users' "My Documents" (including DEFAULT user) to automatically be on Drive D (second hard drive). I know about Rt-CLICK > PROPERTIES > TARGET. I also know about CONSOLE MGT, where I can open a user's PROFILE. What I DO NOT KNOW is exactly what to enter into these blanks. Cannot find answer anywhere that is COMPLETE.

Thanks, but ......

Thanks to both of you. I've already checked these out. The PROBLEM with these is they give instructions for only ONE user -- for example: "D:\My Stuff". What I need is to be able to store MULTIPLE users' "MyDocs" files on

If you have any other sources, please post them here.

Thanks very much for the prompt response. I've been trying to figure this out for many days.

...how many??

off and on, maybe 20 or so. Upstairs we have 3 desktops and 2 laptops. Downstairs, until wiped out by Hurricane Ike, we had 3 more desktops. Friends/colleagues come by to use our computers and/or hook into our network. We have many more at work.

Use folder redirection in group policy editor.

The path to the My Documents folder is stored in the following registry key, where path is the complete path to your storage location:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders

Value Name: Personal
Value Type: REG_SZ
Value Data: path
Any modification from the default is recorded in the following location and the path listed earlier is also updated:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

Value Name: Personal
Value Type: REG_SZ
Value Data: path
If the administrator redirects My Documents by using group policy folder redirection, the path is present in this value and the option to modify the location of the My Documents folder is not available when you view properties of the My Documents folder.

I have been reluctant to use the registry editor. Thank you very much for your information - I can use it to view/compare
what I do with "Properties".

User My Docs

by PoppaTab In reply to WinXP: "My Docs" on Drive ...

How about thinking outside of the box! If the folks have a machine at home use a thumb/pen/flash drive to transfer information. If they do not have a computer at home; use the thumb/pen/flash drive or any portable media tied to a specific user on the system with the redirected My Documents folder. If you have that many computer users; it would be a good idea to run a server with Active Directory which would provide you a much more granular approach. Just my .02 cents.
