WinXP Pro can't log into safe mode?

By dhart131 ·
In normal boot, I can log in with my user name and password or as administrator with password. In safe mode, when I try to log in as same user or administrator it will not accept the same passwords that work in a normal boot. I get an error message that user/password don't match.

No domains

Stand alone computer connects to internet via WIFI.I apologize not that listing that went posting. I have used F8 and msconfig - safeboot and when login comes up it will not accept administrator password that works on normal boot or my user password combo. I am listed as Computer Administrator in user profiles. I have read other threads on this and other websites. Still looking for answer. I know fresh install will probably solve but perfer not to. I was trying to get into safe mode to run a diagnostic for Avira AntiVir support. Since installing it have gotten 4 MBSD's during scheduled maintenance scans at 2AM. Dumps pointed to "AVIPbb.sys". I know that name is also used for virus files. Have scanned with Avira, Threatfire, MalwareBytes, SuperAntispyware and IOBit 360 all came back clean. Everytime I run Avira's Support Collector windos encouters a problem and has to close it - hence trying to get into safe mode and found that problem.

Reset/change the admin password after you log in normally.
Or, create another administrative account to be used for safe mode.

Try that.

have you tried setting the administrator's password?

by CG IT In reply to WinXP Pro can't log into ...

if you can login normally, then go to control panel/admin tools/computer management/local users and groups/users/ then set the password for the user account listed for "built in account for administering the computer".

Sometimes, but not always, this account is not the same as your user account

you can also create an administrator account, in the administrator's security group, seperate from your user account, assign a password, and use this account.

also check which accounts are members of the administrator's security group under the local machine users and groups in computer management. Verify that the account being used is a member of this group. if so, you can set the password for this account under the user in local machine user and groups in computer management.
