WinXP takes several minutes to log off

I recently recovered my system, full install of XP and now it seems to stall on log off whenever I need to either reboot or shut down. Boots fine, launches programs like it should as well. Short of reinstalling, any suggestions? This started the FIRST boot after installation, by the way. Updates didn’t help either.
