Wiping out Inbox items w/ Deleted Item

By anejako ·
A user I am supporting moved one Deleted Item in Outlook 98 to her Inbox (restored it). By doing so, she deleted the entire contents of her Inbox.

None of the usual ways of recovering Deleted Items worked to fix this.

How could this happen?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Try this. In the top left corner of Outlook, click on File, then Open, then Personal Folders file (*.pst)

A small search window should pop up; indicate the drive and path in which to locate your mailbox.pst file. Select the mailbox.pst file and click on the "Open" button.

That should open up your mailbox and all your stored emails.

Another possibility:

You could have a damaged .PST file.

In order to fix it, you'll need to run the Inbox Repair Tool.

The Inbox Repair Tool (Scanpst.exe) is a tool designed to help repair issues associated with Personal Folder files (.PST files). The Inbox Repair Tool ships with Microsoft Windows 95 and also on the Microsoft Office 97 CD-ROM.

The Inbox Repair Tool is automatically installed with all Outlook 98 installation options. To use the tool, click Start , point to Programs , point to Accessories , point to System Tools , and then click Inbox Repair Tool .

This was not exactly the problem, but you gave some good pointers on how to diagnose/repair pst problems.

Backup the file and then compact the file.

Compacting the file resets the file pointers and will recover her inbox if it is there.
