Wireless Network

By kmaso ·
Hi..

I assist in managing a Pacific Adventist University I.T Department and at the same time I am a fifth year student majoring Accounting and I.T.

I want to set up a intranet for 10 workstations for the other part of students who reside at other side of the campus which is 2 kilometers away from the main campus.

Please how can I configure the network cards for each workstation?

Thanks

Koren

Is the 2-km distance within the range of your Wireless Technology? If it is, all you have to do is to install a Wireless NIC in your workstations, use the software that comes with the NIC (Linksys has plenty of this) to configure it. Install a Wireless Access Point in your intranet server. (ask Linksys if it has a Model that can pick up signals up to 2-km distance. If it does not have this device, look for other manufacturers, but you have to buy the Wireless NIC of the workstations from thesame manufacturer to prevent configuration debacle). Set them up in a Server/Client environment. Input a static IP address in your server and configure the workstations to obtain IP automatically. If you are on W2K Server, it is advisable to put up a DHCP by running DCpromo on the run command, configure a scope, authorize and activate it. Then configure your DNS zone.

Too far !!!

Use VPN instead, even modems would do, in RAS.
