    Wireless network switch

    by philplunkett ·

    Hi,
This may be a silly question, but here goes.
Is it possible to have a network switch that is not connected to the router by a cable?
I am asking as I want to upgrade my broadband to full fibre, which means that BT will install a new cable at the front of the house, and I don’t have a route to my understairs cupboard, where my various hubs (hue, hive, etc) are connected to a netgear switch.
I don’t want to have a cable running around the walls., so if my new router is in the living room, can I wirelessly connect to a new switch?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Was a Powerline Kit. These are specific to your country so I won’t offer an example here. This neatly sidesteps range and other issues with WiFi.

Another solution is to go with MESH networking. Some systems put Ethernet ports on the devices which you can connect to a switch or device.

      Hello,

Your question isn’t silly at all! It’s a common concern when upgrading home networks. While traditional network switches require a wired connection to the router, there are ways to achieve a similar setup wirelessly, such as a wirelesss access point configured as a wireless bridge.

Yes, it’s possible to have a network switch that connects wirelessly to your router, but it requires a specific type of device known as a wireless bridge or access point with bridge mode. These devices can connect to your router over Wi-Fi and then provide wired Ethernet connections to your devices. It’s important to make sure that the wireless bridge supports your network speed and security requirements for optimal performance. Also, keep in mind that wireless connections might introduce some latency compared to wired connections.
