Wireless not working at hotel

By Battlereaver ·
Hey all,

I have an issue with one of my employees at a hotel with his Wireless not working properly. We have 3 people there total and 2 are not working and one is. Only differences are one is using firefox the others are using IE.

I talked him through checking to make sure DHCP was on, obtaining a DNS, made sure he was connected to the right wifi, had him clear internet browsing history to see if there was a security page not loading. Had him make sure IE lan settings was set to automatically detect and had it run a diagnose and they only solution it found was it said it wasnt set to auto connect to that network. I am kind of stumped on why his computer will not establish the connection it calls it a unidentified network each time he connects. He can connect to other wireless locations just fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated... Thanks!

Has he checked the front desk?

Sometimes they have 'cheat sheets' for settings unique to that facility.

Try reposting this in the 'Q&A' forum. The 'Discussion' forum is for matters of general discussion, not specific problems in search of a solution. The 'Water Cooler' is for non-technical discussions. You can submit a question to 'Q&A' here:

There are TR members who specifically seek out problems in need of a solution. Although there is some overlap between the forums, you'll find more of those members in 'Q&A' than in 'Discussions' or 'Water Cooler'.

Try to reset the router. The problem may be at the router.

Wifi issue

Hi, Battlereaver.
I've been there. Here is your problem, I'll bet. You say the user has no issue except there at the hotel? Is the laptop a government or high-security issued laptop from say a Bank, a Law Firm, etc.? There are a plethora of programs out there that can lock down a wireless card to prevent it from connecting to "Open" wireless networks. In other words, networks without some type of firewall or encryption detected. You can test this by adding security to the AP the user is attempting to connect to. Another option, check which Anti-Virus Program they have. Some offer this feature built-in but can be disabled or exceptions built. You may also want to try to build the BSSID into the wireless settings manually but if I'm correct about the laptop, that won't work. Just another idea.
