With all this discussion about math, whatever happened to ARITHMETIC?

I read a fair-sized chunk of the MATH / PROGRAMMING discussion and wondered why no-one seemed to be an exponent of arithmetic. I got an O-Level in Arithmetic before they “incorporated” it into Mathematics.

Nowadays, if there’s a power outage your local supermarket has to close because they can’t add up the cost of your shopping trolley without the electronic register. No-one it seems to me, can add things up in their heads anymore.
