Wizard and Active Directory setup

By wmiller@arrowinternationa ·
How can I setup a new server using my existing domain name ARROWINTERNATIONAL.COM when the wizard stops and says that ARROWINTERNATIONAL is too long for my netbios name. I need to keep the same name I'm using on my NT PDS, but I don't want to upgrade my PDS.

Try using arrowinternational without the .com.
This will work.

Hi Miller,
NetBiOS name is limited to 8 characters only. However, it shouldn't be a problem. Just install your server as a workgroup, then try to setup the active directory later as a domain member of your NT PDC.
Good luck

NetBIOS domain names are limited to 15 characters (not you can use arrowinternational.com for your AD name space, but you will need a shorter (15 character or less) for the backwards compatability with legacy windows clients. If you want to use the same NT domain name as your existing NT4 domain, you have to upgrade the PDC. You can install a new server as a NT4 BDC, then premote to PDC, then upgrade to Win2K. You cannot install Win2k as a member of an NT4 domain, then do a dcpromo to install it as a DC.
