WLAN in small business environment

By toptiger ·
I have several small business ckients who are considering a wireless lan (10-40 nodes) and would like comments on others' experience in this environment. Please comment on hardware, preferred vendor, costs, time frame, security issues, etc.

Is one vendor solution preferable to another? Prices can differ greatly for hardware.

Thanks for the input.

Generally, the more you pay, the better the product. Look at vendor's specifications. Look at client's environment. TEST.

Wireless can work, but it's very, very specific to each user's environment. You need to look at what your clients are planning, look at where, look at distances, obstacles (line of sight is best for wireless hubs, gateways, etc), determine if there's any kind of electromagnetic interferance, determine which hardware meets the minimum of these specifications and test! Purchase from someone willing to give you an acceptable refund if the hardware does not work in the planned configuration.

There is a new standard coming out this fall/winter 802.11a, which will be at a different freq. than 802.11b (2.4GHz) and will offer faster speeds. Important note: if you clients have a 2.4GHz phones then that can posibly drop the network connection. Looking for a try & buy company - try SMC
