WMP problems

By vinaygovind ·

i am experiencing problems playing AVI and MPEG files in WMP.. it also seems to prevent me opening MOV of MPEG4 files from in Quicktime Player.

the error message is " the codec used to compress the file cannot be found"

i do have the K-lite Codec pack installed and im runing FFDshow but i could have possibly not configured it correctly

does anyone know how to configure it so i dont experience these problems?

Your CODEC is out of date.

Log into one of the sites offering a full CODEC pack and download the most recent you can find.

Every CODEC pack eventually becomes old - get a newer one. :)

Dump the codec pack

by sixstringchef73 In reply to WMP problems

If you haven't been told already, dump the codec pack. If you use ffd-show and a codec pack together, that could be your problem right there. Competing codecs can cause system wide problems. It depends on what version on WMP you are using. WMP in Win7 plays mov natively. It's the only version that does. There are also good alternatives to using WMP or Quicktime. Like VLC media player that plays just about everything but Real codecs. Though I wouldn't use codec packs myself, a lot of people have had success with Shark's codec packs. He has a decent set that doesn't take over your system and will allow mov to play in WMP. Do a search for He has a codec pack for every version of Windows and offers great support. Plus, it's all free.
