WOL and 3COM switch issue

By joe.seiler ·
A recent problem developed with a powered off IBM laptop with a 3COM WOL 10/100 ethernet mini PCI card connected to a 3COM 3300 10/100 Switch. Recently the adapter in the powered off laptop flooded the switch with broadcast packets (best guess) and caused the switch to have a buffer overflow bringing down the network. Has anyone seen this behavior? Anyone know if the WOL NIC will broadcast storm and what sets it off?

I would suggest that you visit 3coms web site and look into the NIC section for information,If on wakeup the PC requires a DHCP lease then the network card will be asking the server for an address which will be in the form of a braodcast. If your network is noisy then the NIC may have trouble connecting to the server and will keep braodcasting a "here I am" signal
Bad NICS can also cause problems by tranmitting bad packets onto the network

Thanks for your answer. Unfortunately these steps were the first on my list and they were no help. The problem has not resurfaced so a sniff of the traffic is also not available.
Thanks again for responding
