    Won’t boot to login

    Locked

I have XP Pro. Hard drive is partitioned into two with dual boot. When I start the PC – I select one partition called “Games” and it starts ok – no problems. If when I start the PC and select the other partition called “Windows” it goes through the process where you see the Windows splash screen (the one theat shows “XP” and the moving bar….) it finishes that but then does not go to the blue login screen – it goes to a blank black screen and all you can see is the white cursor.
    Any help appreciated.

Have you tried boot the “windows” partition in safe mode?

If that fails then it may mean you need to re-install the windows partition again.

Before you go for the Re-install Though. Stick your XP Disk back into the CD-Rom and Boot from the cd-rom, when it prompt’s you! Try to “Repair XP”

See how you get on with this!

You probably have Drive Mappings which point to a drive that isn’t there. Use a Program like Partition Magic to setup Dual Boot Systems. You also have a Program called “DriveMapper” that comes with this product, and with this Program you can change the settings in your Windows Registry to point to the correct Drives.

What you might try and so is remove your video card drivers from the xp instalation. Reboot with the defaul driver installed and see if you can get the login screen to appear.

I’m not sure that will work as my other boot partition which is exactly the same boots fine. Though I will try it.

One thought I have is if you have installed Microsoft SP2 it could be causing this as well. Think of any software or hardware changes you made most recently. Boot in to Safe Mode via F8.. see if SP2 is installed.. try uninstalling it if possible.. Check Device Manager and see if any Conflicts exist…
      Good luck!

Hi – as I said the screen is black – can’t see anything except the white mouse pointer and the white words that say “Safe Mode”. Can’t click on anything. Can you tell me how I check the device manager?

Which partition is first on the drive? I would venture to say it is Games. If you can boot into either partition, you should be able to access the other and manipulate the data it contains…such as backing up whatever is on that particular partition. Then you could just reinstall XP on that partition once your data is safe.

Well from what others have posted here you are getting into XP in safe mode but you just can not see anything.

Try the obvious and use the recovery console on the install CD to see if you can correct this problem. The other thing to think about is that since this has been working for a period of time what has been changed or added immediately prior to the problem occurring. From your description above you seem to have two partitions one for games another for work and it seems to be the latter which has gone by by for some reason.

The really obvious thing here is a new game that has been installed corrupting the setup of the computer somehow. As you are getting the “Safe Mode” labels you are really in Windows but there is obviously something wrong with one of the critical XP files that opens XP.

You could try going into the Game partition and using Admin privileges check out the files on the other partition for files with a 0 bite size in Windows the really obvious places to look are the WIN.INI & SYS.INI files but the repair console should be of more help here.

      Col

Norton System Works Pro 2002 Run Disk Dr. from the CD in the operating side of the OS (check the boxes Fix Problems and Ck. Free Space, Run Disk Dr., then schedule a disk check when it asks you to for both drives. Re-boot when it asks you to and remove the NSW CD.

It ill run a disk check outside of Win XP then it will fix the disk Security Descriptors for the NT Boot Loader and will boot right into XP.

Good Luck. (More info is on another post in this category).
