Word 2000 Macro Virus??

By Lime Guy ·
I am running win 2000 sp3 and I have Office 2000 with latest sp's, when I open a new or old word document and type the word the and hit enter or space the word changes to GOTCHA!!!. I have uninstalled and reinstalled office and even tried using a different version, my guess is a macro virus, but I have used both Panda and Norton 2002 don't find any infections. Any help would be great, Pete, (Lime Guy)

I think that it is an autocorrect entry in your word processor and not a virus.
STEPS:
*Click Tools on the menu bar
*Click Autocorrect
*Click the autocorrect tab on the dialog box and then scroll down the window to see the word in question 'the' on the left hand side
*you will see the text 'GOTCHA' next to this
*delete the entry
*click ok

Test this by typing 'the' in the word processor.

Looks like someone is having fun at your expense!!

You will know if you have a macro virus by clicking the tools, macro, visual basic editor
You will find a directory file, look for a file named module and thisdocument and other file. Double click it. If the file is clean or no data, you don't have a macro virus. If there is data, delete it and save your file. Check also if the file is hidden or you cannot open the file

Thanks for the help, the problem was indeed that the auto correct had been changed on my computer. The bigger mystery might be which on of my children has gotten clever enough to make that change. The answer about finding the macro virus was also good, it will be helpful in the future I'm sure. Pete
