    Word 2K – centering text

    Locked

    by islander ·

I have trouble centering text (sentences)in Word 2000. One of my users have a 15 page doc and can’t center properly one some pages. When centering text on one page just the test selected centers but on some pages when trying to center the selected page the whole page centers. I would like to change it so only the selected text is centered not the whole page. I am sure its just an option someone but I can’t find it. Please Please help.

Select the text with Show/Hide turned on. Make sure the last pilcrow (?)is selected. Go to Format>Paragraph and choose Align Center.

You can also Insert>Break and put a Continuous Section break before and after the targeted text.
The purpose of using Show/Hide is to isolate paragraphs. When you select the text, to just include the trailing pilcrow.

Make sure that automatically update is not selected.
If the Styles and Formatting task pane is not open, click Styles and Formatting on the Formatting toolbar.
Right-click the style you want to have Microsoft Word not automatically update. (probably Normal)
        Click Modify.
Deselect the Automatically update check box.
From now on, Word will not automatically redefine the style you selected whenever you apply manual formatting to any paragraph with this style.

I’ve run into this issue myself and it seems that when an entire page follows the centering that I just wanted to do on 4 lines, I discover that the entire page or paragraph has been specially formatted. In order to manipulate the few lines of text that I want to change, I must first remove the formatting that has already been applied to the text or over-ride it.

Select the text you want to manipulate and from the Format Menu select Paragraph. The box that appears will tell you how the text you selected is CURRENTLY formatted. Re-set the formatting to the defaults and you should then be able to do whatever you want with the text.

First, as soon as you center the text (and the other text changes, too), press [Ctrl]Z. If the other ‘graphs go back to regular justification, and the one you wanted to center sticks, it’s the style!!!! If the style of the ‘graph you’re centering is Normal, and if that style is set to “auto update,” then every time you center something, all the other Normal graphs will become centered too. Go to Format Styles and edit that style and deactivate the “auto update” option.
