Word 8.0 -Unable to run due to lack of m

By MoodySkipper ·
I have had this appear on numerous PC's running both 95 and 98. This is part of Office 97 and keeps showing word 8.0. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the said program. I have also tried changing the virtual memory settings to no avail. This is on a machine that has at least 4Gb Hdd free and has 128Mb RAM installed. The only way out of all this was to format the C: drive and re-install windows and all the software. Please can someone show me an easier way out of this.
Thanks
Howell Rees

If the problem is lack of memory, try adding this two lines to the machine's config.sys

DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
FILES=250

That should also resolve the memory issue with Norton Antivirus, should you have it install it.

Also, check Microsoft for SR1 for Office 97.
That will get your programs running with the updated files.

Check for virus??!!

I sounds ackward, but delete the normal.dot before you reboot the machine. Word will create a new one, once you open the program again.

Running out of ideas...

Good Luck!

Right CLick on the My Computer ICON and select Properties. GOTO the Performance tab and then select Virtual Memory. Be sure it is set to "Let Windows Manage...." If it is then set "Let me Specify" and select NO MAXMIMUM and you minimum set to your Current RAM plus 11. So if you have 32 megs of RAM then se it to 43 as the minimum. Or 64 then to 73 megs minimum.

GOOD LUCK

Sounds like you need to clear your temp directories. Although there may be a pleanty of free space on your system, there is a limit to the number of files that can reside in one directory. Too many files would cause an out of memory error.

We just deltree those directories and recreate them with some lines in the autoexec.

I have seen the AutoSave feature of Word cause this problem. Turn off Autosave (under Tools menu, Options) and try to duplicate the error.

Looks like virus attack. This situation may happen when normal.dot or some DLLs are damaged. But when it is happen on numerous mashines... Do you share *.dot files between mashines over network ?
What about other parts of MS-office ? Is there any problems ?
My suggestion: check your mashines for viruses and compare DLLs between "buggy" mashines and "new" (after reformating drive C: and reinstalling WIndows). This can help locate problem.

With best regards,
Vlad.
