This might also apply to Word 2000. It’s all because of poor security. A fiddling schoolboy (among other things) has removed the ‘File’ item from the menu bar in Word 97. If you click View, Toolbars, Customize, then you can remove any item from the menu, but it’s not so easy to put it back.
