Word 97 (.doc) files do not open correctly in XP
PROBLEM: Word 97 (.doc) files do not open correctly in XP when double-clicked.
ERROR MESSAGE: “This action is only valid for products that are currently installed”
INSTALLED oFFICE97 PRO
OS: Win XP
The following attempted solutions have NOT solved the problem:
1. Within the “Open With” window, I selected Word 97 from the list of recommended programs
and checked the box to “Always use the selected program to open this kind of file”
2. I have uninstalled/reinstalled 0ffice, but this has not solved the problem.
3. I have set the executable (winword.exe) to Compatiblity with Win98
From Windows Explorer, I created a working desktop shortcut to launch Word.
I am able to open the files using FILE > OPEN. Once open, files will not save correctly
and Word closes.
The files CAN be opened by right-click > “open with” > “Microsoft Word for Windows 97”.
Once open, files will not save correctly and Word closes.
Any offered solutions will be greatly appreciated.
