Word doc and excel file in system tray

By anejako ·
I am supporting a user who has three application windows in her system tray, two Excel and one Word window. She can maximize
t he window, however when she goes to x out the window will only minimize. File, Exit to close the window, the window only minimized.

When she right clicks on the application rectangle in the system tray (window minimized) she gets the file management menu, and not the window management menu.

WinZip is installed on the machine.

This problem just started, but wereally need to get rid of these docs in the system tray.

Any ideas?

You don?t mention the version number, but there are a couple of things to try. Ctrl+Alt+Esc will bring up the task manager and you should be able to close from there.
If this is Office 2000, Choose Tools/Options/View from the menu and uncheck the option called Windows in Taskbar.

There could be an AutoClose macro that?s hung in Personal.xls, or an Add-in.
After closing the apps, look in the startup directories to see if there are any files there
Look for Word?s startup folder and Excel?s XLStart folder

Actually it was not the system tray that was the problem. The user had mistakenly created a toolbar that held the Word and Excel files, and it was sitting on their Windows Taskbar--right next to the system tray.
Thank you for the tip about being unable to quit Excel--I will remember that.
