Word document file name starting with ~$

By david ·
What causes or where does it come from for a MS Word 2003 document in Windows XP environment to start with ~$ and the rest of the name look like part of the name of a real document? Thanks

Word defaults with the option SAVE AUTORECOVERY INFO EVERY: 10 MINUTES. What you are seeing are temporary files that created every 10 minutes while you are using Word and have not saved the document. If your system crashed, the Word would use these to recover whatever you were working on at the time. They don't necessarily get deleted all the time so it is safe to delete them if you have saved your files.
