Word/Excel 97 hang in local logon

By anticnz ·
A user has a Compaq E500 laptop running NT4 on a Novell network. While in the metwork MS Word and Excel work fine. When logged onto the laptop locally they hang occasionally (no error messages).
The user tells me that previous support staff have used a registry edit to fix this problem for others, but I cannot find the fix documented anywhere.

The problem may be that Word and Excel remember the last n (user settable) files which were opened. If those files are not accessable (they were on a network you are no longer connected to) you hang. (You can create the same problem in word by editing a file on a floppy, closing, quitting, removing the floppy, then restarting word.)

The registry fix may be to clear the list or it may be to set the number of remembered files to zero.

Good luck.

Clearing recent files did not help .. the answer made me think of other network related files (e.g. user templates are on network) but changing to local templates did not help either. Anticnz

Still haven't found the registry edit(s) required but creating a local user with a local printer (completely non existant but necessary to fool Novell installed MS Apps that no network printer is required)and redirecting templates and file locationsto C: drive is a workaround Anticnz
