I cannot open my microsoft word 98 machintosh edition. I keep getting this message: unexpected critical error. All my other Microsoft programs work fine. Is there an update I can download that would take care of this problem?

Generally as this is running on OS 9 (Word 9 - you can go to the System Folder and Preferences and throw out the preference file for Word and restart the machine. This is a good first step in checking these non-specific errors and often solves the problem.
There was a VBA error that would cause this problem, and downloading the Office 98 Combined updater from http://www.microsoft.com/mac fixes that. There should also be an OS9 update and W2K update in the same location.
There are actually TWO updates for Microsoft Word 98. The first is needed for Mac OS 8.6 but both are needed for Mac OS 9.x and above. If you can not find them on MS's site let me know and I will be happy to email them to you.

One possibility is that you moved the icon to the desktop. You might see if you are clicking on a link. I don't know the OS that you are running. Try putting the Word Icon back into the Applications folder. Then try dragging the Word Icon to the Dock. If you want to open Word from the desktop you need to use a link. This link will need to be updated if you upgrade your Word application.
If you're asking for technical help, please be sure to include all your system info, including operating system, model number, and any other specifics related to the problem. Also please exercise your best judgment when posting in the forums--revealing personal information such as your e-mail address, telephone number, and address is not recommended.
