    Word Problems

    Locked

    by dean.morris ·

Every time I try to open multiple files in Word 97 the machine crashes. The machine also crashes if I change the file location to a network drive in Word 97. I have unistalled and reinstalled office several times! I have tried just installing word and still have the same problems.

      Some general ideas
      SCOPE of PROBLEM
Is it one user or all users?
Is it one machine or all machines?
Do other programs e.g. Excel work ok?
      SPECIFICS
How much free space is there for Temp files?
      e.g 1MB Free not enough.
Hom much RAM does the machine have e.g. 16MB may not be enough.
      Ideas
Set DR.Watson running to trap the error.
Get the error message and look up in Technet. (or post to the forum)

      Guy is right …

      What OS? (win 95, 98 2000, NT?)
CPU & speed, RAM, HD free space
      Video might matter
Network info: Client Servor or Peer to Peer, etc.

The more info the better your chances of a viable answer.

This could be a number of problems not related directly to Word. File size, disk space, and ram. Does it happen on another PC opening the same files? If not, what is different on the PC that it works on. You have to have double the space for thefile to open due to the temp file. You may want to perform standard clean-up on your PC by removing temp files, scandisk, defrag.

Here’s a suggestion for the first part of your question. I have no clues on the network part…

Try to changing the default printer. Why? Because Word formats all documents to fit on the default printer. Sometimes a printer driver can cause Word to crash for no apparent reason.

      Good luck.
