WORD : symbols shown as numbers

By charlesteo ·
Hi there,

Has anyone encountered the situation below?

These Word documents with "Tick" symbols are saved in Office 97 on Windows NT.
However, the "Tick" symbol is shown as a number in Word 2002 (Office XP) on Windows XP.

I can't seem to find any answers on the microsoft site.

i have not heard of this myself. what font is being used in this document? is it available on the xp box? this sounds like a font translation problem to me...
otherwise maybe it is a document filter bug in office xp, in which case i would have expected you to be able to find something on it at
you could maybe also test for this by saving doc as rtf document. maybe that will be translated correctly in word xp...
if you think font translation is the case, workaround is to install missing font on target machine or change font(s) in source doc(s) so they all are same and exist on both machines....

Thanks for the suggestion.
But it did not work.
However, I did found out what's wrong. When the user is saving the Word 97 document, the option for "Embed truetype fonts" is not selected. Once that is selected and then saved.
The Word 97 document with the symbols can be seen on Office XP in Windows XP.

Thanks again.
