Word2000 locks Access97 db during merge

By kevrizz ·
We are using an Access97 database to merge with Word 2000 but the process locks the whole database. The Access 97 databse is read only. Does anyone know what's happening?

The database is locked when you are using it in a Word merge so that no records change until the merge is done. This is done because any sorts or record numbers in the merge could change if the information in the database were able to be modified while the merge is taking place.

Microsoft Access uses "optimistic locking" to protect records that might be accessed by multiple users. This can be modified. More information about this is in Microsoft Knowledge Base articles Q225926, Q209763 and Q275561 (see "Record-Level Locking")at http://support.microsoft.com/directory/

You might also want to consider using the Office Links to "Publish It in Word", which would convert the table or query you are using in the merge to a Word table. The merge can then be done using theWord table and the Access database will be available to other users.

When we used the Access97 database with Word 97, there was no lock up. Is it something to do with Word 2000?
