Word97 and IE 5.5

By Lynne's Honey ·
Installed IE 5.5 on several machines and athe response time in Word 97, from opening, opening files, writing to the screen, closing and saving files has increased, according to the users. The users use Word 97 almost exclusively (they are writers) so they know the program very well. Since I was also updating the machines with all the patches from MS, It took a while to narrow the problem down to IE 5.5. It also seems to slow down the machines as well. Setup is PII-233, 64 MB RAM, Windows 98, networked, File server is NetWare 3.2. Netscape 4.75 is also installed.

What I would like to know is how to bring the response of Word back to "normal". This is the first upgrade of IE where the speed differential was noticable, in response to your further comments.

This is not an uncommon problem when upgrading to new versions of IE.

There are several questions still to be answered: is Word installed locally, or is it running off the server?? are your users saving files locally?? do you have a "pre-upgrade" pc to perform benchmark tests on. is IE running while Word is being used?? Does the file server have the most recent patches?? If all else fails, upgrade the memory. 64MB is barely enough to run office & windows, in the real world. good luck.

Word is installed locally, and files are saved to the server or floppy, dependant on that status of the file. IE is not being run when Word is being used, the browser of choice for the department is Netscape. The server is patched properly. And Ihave another client running Word and 95/98 on machines with less than 64 MB with no problems, but the IE is yet to be upgraded. As for benchmarks, on another machine in the department that has not had the upgrade, the load time is minimally faster. I can't really compare the speed whilst editing as they all do things a bit differently.

I'd lay odds that the culprit is something that IE5.5 installs, called DCOM95. Look in your Windows Directory for that folder, and you will have found your culprit. Microsoft has a page just loaded with things to tweak in DCOM that may make your Office package run smoother and quicker. Check with http://support.microsoft.com for more info.

No sign of DCOM95 on any of the afflicted machines. No sign of a file named DCOM*.* on any of the machines.

Greetings,

I'd go back to I.E. 5.0

I've found version 5.5 to be problematic, and there's no real compelling reason to choose 5.5 over 5.0 anyway.

Just a thought.
