Word97: two types of page numbers

    Locked

    by thestudent ·

I use Word 97 to type papers for a class I am attending. The format of the paper is as follows:

    1. The title page should not display a page number and should not count as page 1.
    2. The next few pages should be numbered in lower case Roman numerals (i,ii,iii, etc.)
    3. The body of the paper should be numbered consecutively starting from the number 1,2,3, etc.

I have tried to insert continuous breaks and tell Word to “Start at…” but it doesn’t accomplish all of the above. Help!

      You’re on the right track.
      1. Place a Continuous Break between each section.
      2. Start at the first page you want to number and put the page number on it. Use the Page Number dialog box FORMAT button to choose the numbering style and initial value.
      3. Go to the next section and edit the Header/Footer your page number is in. On the Header/Footer toolbar there’s a button called SAME AS PREVIOUS that will be turned on (pushed in appearance). Click on that button to specify that this sectionwill not use the same Header/Footer as the previous section. Use the INSERT, PAGE NUMBER command to add this section’s page numbering style and value as above.
      4. Repeat as needed.

        Larry,

Thank you for your kind answer. I was actually releaved to see your answer because it is basically what I had tried. The difference was that I did not have a SAME AS PREVIOUS option and only received this button when I inserted 3 sectionbreak buttons. So, thank you!

The first two parts of your solution were successful — I was able to add a title page without a page number and I was able to number the first set of pages: i,ii,iii. Then, I put in section breaks to start my nextsection of page numbers which should have been 1, 2, 3,… but unfortunately the page would only start at 2, 3, 4, no matter what I did. For example, I did have the “Start At:” option set to start at 1.

I am awarding you full points, however, because your answer in combination with the answer from the second posting solved the problem ! Thank you!

      1. Go to Insert > Page Numbers. Make sure that the box for “Show number on first page” is not selected. If it is deselect it. If not and the title page still shows a page number then select the “show number on first page” and then OK. Then go back into Insert > Page Numbers and deselect “show number on first page”.
      2. While you are in Page Numbers dialog box, choose Format. From there you can choose the lower case Roman numerals for the next few pages.
      3. Now go into the first page of the body of your paper and go into View > Header and Footer. Select the “switch between header and footer” icon to go to the footer (if you are numbering at the bottom of the page). Next select the Page Setup icon and change the Apply to: to “This point forward” and deselect “Different first page” in the Header and Footer section. Hit OK. Select the Format Page icon and choose Arabic numerals and choose 1 for the Start at.
      Good luck!
      Jeff

To use different page numbering schemes throughout a document you need to use a SECTION break (Next Page)

Delete any manual breaks you have inserted, so you just have the automatic page breaks put in by Word.

Place the Insertion Point (vertical flashing cursor) at the end of your title page just before the page break. Go to the ‘Insert’ menu, select ‘Break’. From the ‘Break’ dialog box select ‘Section Break’ in the lower half of the ‘Break’ dialog box select ‘Next Page’

Do the same at the end of the last page to be numbered i,ii,iii…

Go to you title page and ensure that there are no page numbers set. If there are delete them through the ‘View-Headers and Footers’ command. (view menu)

Now go to the first page of the section to be numbered, i,ii,iii… (,make sure the insertion point on this page). Now set the page numbers for this section as you normally would. Note the Word status bar at the bottom of the screen has ‘Sec 2’ on it showing you the Insertion Point is in section 2 of you
