Workflow Best Practices

By jhostetler ·
My client has 100 personnel forms in MS WORD. They wish to publish them electronically, and automate the routing. These forms must contain list boxes with valid selections based on the user's department or manager, etc.

Example: A software installation request. If the dollar amount is big enough it requires approval from the immediate superior, IT Director and Purchasing Mgr.

Each client has IE5, WORD 97 and Outlook 98. I would like to leverage these client tools in the solution. Should I use SQL Server and IIS, or Exchange public folders? I'd like to chew the fat with someone who has actually done this.

Workflow Best Practices

This is only one way this could be done.

At my last place of employment I did smething similar to this. Most of Microsofts products can be Programaticly setup through VBA. OR Go on step farther Visual Basic App.

Another way would move the forms to a web application.

Example VB:
Setup all Form's to be validated as an App. then based on the results of the form Pop off email notifying the immediate superior, IT Director and Purchasing Mgr through an email. or if everything is validated then file information, (either print form, submit to database or other.)

Example Web App:
Setup forms and validation routines as web pages. Depending if the forms are validated or special requirments are met then pop off email or file information.

Either way you decide to go the process will ultimately depen on what the users need and what they would be more comfortable with.

I have setup an intranet that works with both of these examples.

If you have any more questions or need some help you
