Works 4.0 Spread sheets to Excel

By stoker ·
The Only solution MS offers is to open the file in Works and save it as Excel (5) format, so MS qualifies for gold medal in THE "We can work with 3rd part sw, but not our own" award, Bill pooped on his leg.
Anyone who know about any tool or filter/plugin that would allow me to convert Works 4.x spreadsheets? I have 400 documents that needs to be converted, no workstations have Works installed anymore and I don't have a CD with works 4.0 on (just the type where it is packed in the restore file for the computer).

Hmmm, there is good reason you have not received an answer on this, or even any input as far as I can see. The solution to your problem is:
There is no knows tool that will convert the Works x.x files to MS Excel in any format. I've worked with many small business clients and have had to give them this same bad news you're receiving now. We can thank MS and Bill for this one. Sorry if I let you down.

Don't be sorry, Bill is the one letting me down... Like what sense does it make to support version 2 files, and not 3 and 4? And why? is the format of these files so complicated and microsoft copyrighted and/or hides the file format definitions?
I see there is some conversion DLL's in the MSWorks program files, If anyone is able to find out how to use those dll's to convert files that would be appreciated... (like using batch/activeperl system rundll(32), or delphi or vb or something) a **** of a lot easier to "vi" a script than opening and saving 400 files... Shame on MS as usual

I haven't tested this, it may not work, but it'd be worth a go.

In Word Create New, 'Other Document', 'Batch Conversion Wizard', try from Works 4 to Word, by default it offers you wps extension for wp docs rather than wks for spreadsheets, you could select *.*, as I said, I don't know if 'Works 4 Document' includes spreadsheets, but what've ya got to lose?

Works text/doc files is no problem, they convert right away/directly, the problem is works 4 spreadsheets. And no, they won't open in Word Either :)
