Workstation Share Limits

By Bra-k ·
I have an NT4 workstation SP6. I am trying to setup a share for several users to connect to. The problem is I need about 15 to 20 users to connect to this share and it seems that I am only allowed 10 connects at one time. I have tried to make a second share to the same folder with a different name and split up the users for access and still get a message on a users PC that maximum connects reached. How can I get all my users to be able to connect to this share at one time. Are there any limits on an NT workstation as to how many shares are allowed to a folder or workstation. I don't won't to put this share on a server because the servers reboot nightly and the files on the share are accessed at all times. Rebooting and loosing connection is not an option.

Thanks in advance.

Bra-k,

No matter what resource users are trying to connect to, NT Workstation can only accept 10 concurrent connections. This is built into NT WS and as far as I know you can not get around this issue.

Even though you have given me the right answer it is not really what I wanted to hear:) For the time being I have to keep these files off of the server until I can get another server just for this purpose. So for now I will just have to put these files on 2 workstations and split the shares.

Thanks,

ok, since the limit is 10, you can still make a list and put as many people as you want on the perm list for access.

is it really possible that more than 10 concurrent users will be accessing this share at the same time? well, i guess if you put it in the login script it will.

for this type of service, i would go with putting on a server. why anyone is rebooting servers nightly is beyond me. that is definitely not necessary and probably does more harm than good in the long run.

but, be that as it may, why not just upgrade that NT WS to a NT Server and don't reboot it?

I miss stated when I said the servers or rebooted nightly, they are rebooted weekly for purposes I do not know why, (it comes from corporate to do this).
