wrong modem speed on win 2000 not 56k no

by Dakun In reply to wrong modem speed on win ...

when I upgraded to win 2000, I had the message that my modem increased the speed from 52k to 128k, and drop the line in 2 min!
After I updated my modem driver to the newest one, all things become OK!

I agree that it sounds like a driver issue; what is probably happening is that the modem is failing to negotiate a v.90 connection so it falls back to 33.6.

You might want to check that your modem in on the W2K Hardware Compatibility List (many are not) and then check with the manufacturer for a driver. The only hardware problems I've had with W2K have been related to modems so it is a common trouble spot.

Remove your modem from Device Manager. Click Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager. Expand the modem icon and right click on your modem. Click Uninstall and follow the prompt.

Restart your Win2K and let it detect your modem and install its driver. You may want to supply the driver that came with your modem by specifying "Other Location."

This will update the driver for your modem accordingly.

Good luck.
