Wrong W2K domain name

By Chorlton ·
I have just taken over as Network Administrator at a small company. The W2K server has an incorrect domain name set up, (non DNS), this means that only pre W2K clients can connect to it. How do I change the domain that the server is a member of without rebuilding it?

Domain set in "System properties" "Network Identification". Set new domain name and Ok.
Use "Server Manager" on PDC to add computer to Domain.

The domain can be changed @ Right click on My netweork places, Go to Advanced, Network Identification, properties. Change the domain name and reboot.

Good luck!

If the server is a DC then demote it to a member server using 'dcpromo' from a cmd-line. Make sure you have a backup DC running before you do (this can be an NT BDC). Then change name/domain as needed, update DNS (if it's on the DC, remove the service to have it rebuilt by dcpromo) and run dcpromo again to re-promote to DC.
If it isn't a DC you can just right-click on My Computer, choose properties and go to Network Identification to change domain-membership.

Great I'll as it's the only DC on the network, I'll get onto this one weekend (very soon)
