I have a pc running Windows XP Pro with SP1 when I logon the pc boots up fine but when I am at my desktop my cursor stays as an hour glass whenever it is placed on the toolbar. I cannot click on start or any icon on the toolbar it does nothing. If I put my cursor on the desktop it turns back to an arrow and I can click any icon and it opens with no problem. One thing I did to fix the problem was I went into taskmanager and ended the process which was called wupdate.exe. when I ended this I was then able to click on start on the toolbar or any icon on the toolbar and it worked fine the hourglass was gone. My question is, has anyone seen this and what is the fix? I don't want to have to end the process everytime I boot up. I ran Symantec and it found nothing. what is wupdate.exe? Windows update? How can I fix this problem I searched the net but found nothing. Help, please.

Thanks all! This worked all clean now. Just so you all know after downloading Adaware make sure you update it.

Like Answer1 said, scan for spyware. wupdate.exe is NOT the Windows Update file; that filename is WUPDMGR.EXE

There is a spyware file (called Adware.Wengs by Symantec) that uses an EXE file called WUPDATE.EXE to run. Here is the Symantec write-up on this:

So, get something like Ad-Aware (from, update it and run it to detect/remove spyware. Make sure it finds this file. I would also do an update antivirus scan also, just to be sure.
