XML special character handling

we use DataStage TX to convert CSV files to XML format. We are provided the XSD (schema) to create output TYPE TREE, we just create input Type Tree based on mapping document. we are asked to handle special XML characters (& etc). where do we handle these characters, is it in XSD or somwhere else?
