XMS Driver Missing

By pappasmurfsr49 ·
I hava a Generic computer with Win98se. When trying to boot in safe mode, HIMEN says there is an error in the Extended Memory. After searching for xmsmmgr it tells me the XMSdriver is missing.
Where can I get the driver? How do I install it?
Can I use the Win98 CD to replace it ? HOW?

That is correct In Safe Mode only the minimum set of drivers are installed to allow the system to work so that some problems can be fixed. The HiMEM program shouldn't be working so you may get an error message telling you effectively that you are only running with Minimum Memory available. If this was to happen when you booted normally there would be a line or 2 missing in your Autoexe file.

But this shouldn't be loaded in Safe Mode as it will allow any Memory Resident Virus to load and be impossible to remove.

With the 98 Floppy look in the Config and Autoexe files to see if the XMS Driver is listed. The most likely thing that has happened is that the startup reference the the XMS driver has gone missing and you should be able to use one of the old Config Files or Autoexe files by just renaming them to the proper file names and have everything working again.

If not and you know what you are doing you can edit the files in question or do an Inplace Install of 98 this just involves using a Windows 98 Boot Floppy and the original Install CD and reinstalling 98 onto the HDD this should remove the existing 98 files and rewrite them but you'll need to apply any Service Packs or Patches as these will be treated as changes to the OS and will be removed.

Hi

Look here on how to extract a good copy of the file you require:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/129605/en-us

Does the error message actually say that the "XMSDriver" is missing or does it give a filename? This is usually himem.sys, and there is a gebnuine error about it not being present when it actually is.

Good luck
