XP 64 HP driver from MS Won’t finish install

Every boot the system detects and attempts to install my hp1100 (paralell) printer. It starts the wizard and then fails to complete saying there was a problem installing. The printer works ok but I would rather the computer stop trying to install the P&P device because it takes time during each boot to fail to complete the wizard. The driver is the correct one supplied on the win XP 64 disk. Do I need to nuke and reinstall the .INF file? Any other ideas?
