when i try to connect to my xp machine it keeps saying "incorrect password" and doesn't give me a chance to enter my xp account name...

I had this same problem. You must run Windows XP's Network Setup Wizard on the Windows XP machine ONLY. It will then let you access the shares. Don't run the wizard on any other computers. I hope this helps!

Win98 has no security, while NT/2000/XP are built around security. The way to trick this sometimes is to build a logon on your Win98 box that is the same username/password as your XP username and password.
You are hitting the XP share, and its security is set for accounts it is aware of. It does not know your 98 account (if you even use one; that is why I say make an account on 98, log in with it, and try again).
Hope this helps.
