xp and hp printers

I have loaded XP pro on my home pc a dell optiplex gx1 550mhz with 256 mb ram. If I reboot with the usb print cable (HP Photo 1000 printer)plugged in ,the system locks up during startup and the screen goes blank. I have to unplug the usb cable for the printer and then restart, plug the cable in after start up and it works fine until I have to restart the next time. Tried differant cables and a diffrant usb port . Any suggestions?
