XP and Outlook

By steve-the-helpdesk ·
My MD has just bought a new machine with XP Pro and Office XP Pro pre-installed. He has successfully created his own profile at XP log-on and a new e-mail account in Outlook.

Here is the problem. He wants to set up another profile for his wife, together with her unique e-mail account. The log-on is good but the e-mail account will not work. I have no hands-on experience with XP ( I look after a completely NT shop ) and can't get my hands on the problem machine, anyway - it's 200 miles away.

Is there a trick to configuring multiple e-mail accounts - in Outlook - within XP?

Thanks

Steve

Hi,
Without some description of the error message, or what happens when you try to create the mail profile, people can't really help. Mail account info is stored in the hk_current_user registry area for each different account. If the boss's wifeis logging in with her own username \ password then i don't think that xp is going to be the problem. more likely there is an issue with the details entered for her mail profile.....

Set up his wife so she can log in and then have her log in and try creating the email account...Then in outlook tools menu, option, mail services tab select prompt for a profile to be used.

I found that I had to go to my ISP provider to create the alternate e-mail accounts there first and then create the account in Outlook. Once it's created in Outlook, you can open the accounts, select the new account, select change and there is a Test Account there which will test the new account through the Mail Server and return an e-mail confirmation to Outlook. Most ISPs permit more than one e-mail account on the same base account (Primary account).

they can add/manage profiles on XP using "control panel > user accounts"

to create multiple profiles in outlook they can right-click on the desktop Outlook icon, select "properties > show profiles > add" and follow the steps. They'll also want to select the "prompt for profile to be used" radio button to enable profile selection at outlook startup. (note: make sure that the data stores they use for the profiles in outlook are not setup in another user's xp profile. if they are, and the other user has their profile marked as private, then they won't be able to access outlook when logged on in another xp profile.)
