XP and Passport

By qomputek ·
Windows XP requires
you to sign up with a Passport account - a questionable
tactic to be sure. An informative site, ProCompetition.org,
has a whitepaper
entitled "Microsoft's Expanding Monopolies: Casting a Wider .NET."
There is an overview
as well. A more focused paper,
"Passport to Monopoly: Windows XP, Passport, and the Emerging World of Distributed Computing," on the implications of Passport on the XP platform
is also at ProComp. The former talks about how everything seems to be bolted together
on XP; you will have one browser, one email client, one multimedia player, etc.
The latter paper does an pretty good job of illustrating how Microsoft intends
to obtain the same control over the internet as they do the desktop... through
Windows XP. This has all kinds of implications, ranging from censorship to the possible loss of privacy.
