I have a laptop, HP ZE5300 2.4ghz, 512mb RAM, 40gig HD, Windows XP Home. I have not added any hardware or software recently, and I run the laptop daily. The problem I am having is I shutdown my laptop normally, and now when I attempt to boot it up it hangs. My background bmp shows up and the start-up sound plays, but that is all. None of the GUI shows up, and all I can do is access Taskmanager. I have tried all of the boot options with the same results. Any help would be appreciated.

Try this: Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to bring up Task Manager, click File>New Task (Run...), and type explorer.exe then click OK. If that does not work try typing C:\Windows\explorer.exe. This command should enable the display of the desktop items.
I have seen viruses that impact having explorer.exe execute on startup. The one I had did not impact explorer when starting in safe mode. I downloaded stinger(some anti-virus software doesn't work well in safe mode) which is a standalone anti-virus tool from Network Associates/Macafee and was able to clean it out, reboot, and magically explorer launched fine.
If this is not an option you may want to look at creating a boot CD - there are several sites on the net which tell you how.
I guess you did not understand. I tried to start windows in all boot modes. All with the same results. I tried a boot CD with a mcafee and a couple of other virus scans, and none of them found any.
