XP can't find files.cab - its on the CD!

By Clint Hartner ·
I'm having a problem with the latest Outlook patch not taking on my machine. The patch requires the original Office CD, which I have, but the patch fails saying it can't find files.cab. I look on the CD, and sure enough, it's right there, but there's a WinZip icon on it. Apparently WinZip changed the association of the .cab files, resulting in XP not being able to find it.

I'm pretty sure this is a registry issue with the associations, but don't know where to look to try to fix the issue (and what .cab should be associated with to correct the situation) I did go into properties and change the association to Windows Explorer, but that didn't clear the problem.

Please help!

The Cabs are located in the I386 folder.

ignore the first answer. I read it wrong. The Office file it should be looking for is data.msi. Confirm that is on the CD.

Try copying the CD to the HD and tell it to look there. I had a problem with this once before using the CD. Unzip anyfiles.

Please note that I can see the cabs in Explorer, but that the update fails to see them. None of the tweaking to date has resulted in the updater seeing the files.cab it is looking for ON THE CD.

First unzip the files and copy to hard drive, copy to C:\I386\WINDOWS folder, note where files are located

Run the setup program, then point to location where the files are located,if the files has a setup file association run setup after copying tohard drive

On my Win2000 Pro computer, the file association for CAB is WinZIP. WinXP is probably the same.

The articles did provide the answer, but not as I would have expected. Seems that the latest update of Norton's Antivirus is the culprit - turn it off and the .cabs magically reappear. This has never happened before (over a year), but appears to be the situation I'll have to live with for the foreseeable future. Thanks for the help.

I have found that especially with Office 2000, Office seems to be able to determine which CD it was installed from. If you don't use that same CD, it will generate the error message you are seeing. Even if you try another CD of the exact same version of Office, more often than not, it will generate the 'files not found' error.

Try and determine if you are using the CD Office was loaded from or a different copy.

In this case I am using the identical distribution CD.
