XP clients suddenly lost domain setting

Few XP clients suddenly lost domain settings and reverted back to workgroup so they can not login to the Windows 2003 server. We found the workaround by re-joing the clients to the domain. But what is causing this? How to prevent this from happening again? Thanks for any info.
