XP CPU Change Questions…

by matt . Updated 20 years ago

I am getting ready to change out the CPU on my custom built system. And i am trying to prepare for what problems this will generate. I am having a hard time trying to find out definitively how this will affect my system.

Will putting in a new CPU cause Windows XP Pro SP2 to no longer boot? Or will it just be re-authentication issues?

The only thing i am changing is going from a Socket 478 2.6 Gig to a 3.2 Gig EE. (Yes, my bios has support for this CPU.)

I have read differing things on what XP binds itself to for authentication. Some places say the bios, others say a unique CPU identifier, and still others list the NIC MAC address.

The reason why i am balking at your basic wipe and reinstall is that i employ a RAID 5 array that was extremely difficult to setup.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks,
