XP CRASH

by david.parkin . Updated 18 years, 9 months ago

Hi,

I built a PC for my son and have XP running on it. It has been working fine up til a day ago when he booted it up and it didnt happen.

What does happen is the following.
1. Windows Bootup screen starts… just gets to a dark shaded image then disappears.

2. The recovery screen appears that says basically XP crashed last time (you know the thing) and the options to boot up normal, safe mode, last best known etc.

No matter WHAT option you take… when it reboots, it comes back to that same screen.

My intention is this.

1. TRY and recover using recovery console, but I have to admit I have about 10% knowlege of what to do in that (Nice of MS to give you this tool and then dont tell Average Joe how to use it)

2. Try reinstalling window and see if I can get it to the point that it will boot up and I can look for virus/trojan etc.

3. Blow it all away and start from scratch.

He said it was OK the last time he used it and that it downloaded an update from Windows when he was last on it. We have Nortons Anti Virus running and have Zone Alarm (free version) as a firewall.

Any other options I should try. I really dont want to blow it away and start again… but if I have to then I have to…
